Discover the Pros and Cons of Living in Sarasota from a Longtime Resident
Are you considering a move to Sarasota? You might have seen the headlines and watched YouTube videos praising Sarasota as one of the best places to live in the United States. A few years ago, it was even voted the number one place to live in Florida. But what is it really like to live here? As someone who has called Sarasota home for the past 13 years, I’m here to share the real deal—both the highs and the lows—about living in this beautiful part of Florida.
I’m Katrin Pfitzenreiter, a local real estate agent covering Sarasota, Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, and Venice. Known for my transparency, I aim to give you an honest take on what makes Sarasota a wonderful place to live and what challenges you might face.
The Pros of Living in Sarasota
1. Stunning Beaches Why move to Sarasota? The beautiful beaches, of course! Siesta Key Beach is world-renowned for its powdery white sand made of 99% quartz, and it has won numerous awards. Beyond Siesta Key, there are other gems like Lido Key Beach and Caspersen Beach, known for its shark tooth treasures. These tranquil waters are perfect for those who love warm, calm seas. Turtle Beach is another local favorite for its serene atmosphere and breathtaking sunsets.
2. Rich Cultural Scene Sarasota offers a vibrant cultural life, reminiscent of big cities but on a more intimate scale. We have exceptional restaurants with chefs from all over the world, and a variety of cultural activities, from museums to theater. Venues like the Urbanite Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre, and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall ensure there’s always something exciting to do.
3. Breathtaking Scenery Visually, Sarasota is stunning. The vistas, whether you’re downtown by the bayfront or driving over the Ringling Bridge, are simply breathtaking. The evolving skyline and beautiful natural landscapes make it a feast for the eyes.
4. Pleasant Weather Year-Round Sarasota enjoys warm weather throughout the year. Summers average between 90-95°F, while winters are a comfortable 75-80°F during the day, rarely dropping below 35-40°F at night. It’s the perfect climate for those who prefer sandals and shorts over winter coats.
5. Central Location Sarasota’s central location in Florida means you’re just a short drive away from major tourist spots like Orlando, Miami, Tampa, and St. Petersburg. It’s ideal for quick weekend getaways without the hassle of long travel.
6. Distinctive Neighborhoods Sarasota’s neighborhoods each have their unique charm. From the beachside vibe of St. Armands Circle to the suburban feel of Lakewood Ranch, there’s a place for everyone. Every area offers something special, making it easy to find a neighborhood that fits your lifestyle.
7. Shopping Galore Shopaholics will love the variety of shopping options in Sarasota. The University Town Center Mall and surrounding areas are packed with stores and restaurants. Downtown Sarasota and St. Armands Circle offer more boutique shopping experiences, while Venice has quaint shops along its Main Street.
8. The Legacy Trail The Legacy Trail is a 19-mile biking and hiking path running from downtown Sarasota to Venice. It offers beautiful views and a safe environment for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s one of the best biking trails in Florida and a great way to explore the area.
The Cons of Living in Sarasota
1. High Home Insurance Costs Home insurance rates in Florida have skyrocketed, with the average homeowner now paying estimated $5,000 annually. Factors like location, age of the home, and proximity to the coast significantly affect these rates. Homeowners in new construction homes further away from the coast in an X zone typically pay less in homeowners insurance.
2. Divisive Politics Florida is known for its heated political climate, and Sarasota is no different. Conversations often quickly turn to politics, which can be overwhelming for some.
3. Highway 75 Traffic Interstate 75 is the main highway through Sarasota, and it can be a hazardous route with heavy truck traffic. Navigating this highway could be stressful, especially for daily commuters.
4. Summer Weather The summer months in Sarasota are hot, humid, and rainy. Afternoon storms can bring heavy downpours and occasional flooding. It’s crucial to experience Sarasota in the summer to ensure you can handle the extreme weather.
5. Red Tide Red tide is a naturally occurring algae bloom that can be harmful to marine life. Sarasotean will typically stay away from the shore during red tide.
6. Seasonal Crowds Tourist season brings an influx of visitors, leading to crowded roads, beaches, and restaurants. While this can be good for the local economy, it can be frustrating for residents who may prefer it less trafficked.
7. Rising Real Estate Prices The real estate market in Sarasota has seen significant increases, with the median price for a single-family home now around $565,000 (as of May 2024). This makes it challenging for many to afford living here, especially compared to prices a few years ago.
8. Humidity The high humidity in the summer months can be uncomfortable and oppressive for those not used to it. It’s essential to spend time in Sarasota during the summer before deciding to move, to ensure you can tolerate the climate.
